The new 3rd generation iPod now has support for VoiceOver. You can either get a 32 gb or a 64 gb iPod touch running this feature. Earlier generation iPods will not have support for this feature, so make sure you buy the 3rd generation iPod! Again, this feature is only supported in 32 and 64 gb iPods only.
And for those who don't know about this, Jaws does work with iTunes, and you have to install an application called jTunes for it to work. Window Eyes 7 works with it as well, but you don't have to install any scripts.
hmm no you don't have to install any aps or scripts for jaws to work with itunes
You don't? A lot of people have told me that Jaws doesn't work all that well with it unless you install the scripts.
no it works fine
Hmmm, strange, then. I've had people on here tell me that Jaws caused some problems on there, and they are running Jaws 10.
Jtunes still gives you some added functionality but Jaws 10 does work fine with itunes .. i have 11 running now and haven't tried it with iTunes 9 yet. but they may have to update jaws to work with iTunes 9 but been using it fine so far.
I even tried iTunes 9 with Window Eyes 6.1, and it works with it. Window Eyes 7 would probably work better, but this version works as well. Kinda cool.
ok well i have tryed for almost 4 daysand can't get i tunes to work in less i have j tunes installed please HELP!
You might want to install kTunes for that. lol jk
well for right now i gave up on the idea of an I touch or an I phone for that matter i want them but i will see if i get any of them for my birthday or christmas before i spend my money on them. it would be nice to have them now but hell with it i will wait let's see if any one gets me one of them for either ocation and then if not i will buy my own. thanks for everything and all the information.
That's sort of a good idea, Jalorna. The 32 gb iPod touch is $300 right now.
yeah but i can get the 16 gig for 199 with out shippping and 227 with shipping
Yeah, but for VoiceOver to work, you need the 32 gb.
yeah voice over only works on the 3rd gen 32 gb or 64 gb ipod touch which are 299 and $399 respectively.
Where does one find JTunes?
thanks
not as far tas the apple website says it said that voice over works on the 16, 32, and 64 and when i called them on friday that is what they told me over the phone also. so i don't know if it is the 32 gig and the 64 gig i know where to get one for like 247 with out shipping and 265 with for the 32 gig one and 276 with out shipping and 289 with shipping for the 64 gig one
and tom just go to google and type in i tunes for jaws and it will pop up with a web page for j tunes.
make sure thats its the 3rd gen 32 gb one they are selling and not the 2nd gen one for that price. and where is this place thats selling them so low?
Yeah, I was gonna say, make sure it's the 3rd generation. In fact, I would just go to an Apple store and buy one from there, so you know that for sure.
the apple store is usually the last place i would buy apple products .. i just go there to play with them and make sure i know which item i want to buy.
Apple does not offer a 16 GB iTouch. They just offer an 8 GB, a 32 GB, and a 64 GB. I am thinking about getting one. And yes, iTunes works fine with JAWS, I just tried it and was exploring it a bit. And you do not need the scripts, they are really expensive (they're like $50, I think). And from what I heard, the only thing that they do differently is tell you the status of your downloads. At least that's what my friend told me. Check out Anna Dresner's book, called the Accessible iPod. It mostly talks about the new Nano that talks, but there is a section on how to use iTunes. It's not that expensive. Go to
www.nbp.org
My friend has it and she's going to give it to me.
Hope this helps,
Macy
Apple used to sell a 16 gb touch, but not anymore. And I will be getting my iTouch next week, so I'm very excited. I've had the opportunity to experience working with the iPhne, which of course will get me ready for the touch. It is really cool how Apple got these iPods and iPhones to do wht they're doing now. Truth be told, I think these gadgets are our future.
And just for your information, Kurzweil has come out with an eReader that will work with the iPhone. Yes, it will read DAISY books.
Wow! That's cool. And I think they are our future as well.
daisy books is the first step. now if the NLS will let you register an ipod as a device to play their books, and apple throws in OCR .. it will own the market.
so I've had this ipod touch 32 gb for about a week now, and it's great, hoping to pool together some users of it so we can learn together, what do you all think?
Perhaps we can do a skype conference or get on team talk and talk aout it. I'd have no problem showing people how it works.
And I got my iPod touch about 3 weeks ago, and I'm already used to it. It's not that hard to use.
I don't find it to hard to use either, wish I had a place to find usable apps though :D
I would be up for a conf about it
The place you want to use is maccessibility.net. They have a nice little place where you can find out about accessible apps.
Thanks, I been there I find the site difficult to use with windoweyes, I'll try it with jaws on monday when I get back to work
hi... perhaps this is not something directly related to the whole IPod touch thinggy, but... will all the IPod family works with voice over now?
Probably not. And there'd be no point for the Shuffle since the Shuffle has no menus. I don't even use my shuffle anymore since I got the VR Stream, but since I only have an 8-gb SD card in there I'm seriously thinking of geting an IPod Touch at some point when my financial situation improves a bit. Either that or just get an IPhone and use the built-in IPod feature. Don't see much point in having both the Touch and IPhone.
Everything has VoiceOver on it except for the iPod classic.
Even the Shuffle? I didn't even think the Shuffle had any menus. Well mine doesn't, but then again that was two years ago this Christmas and I don't even use the darn thing.
Yes, even the shuffel has it.
For though's of you that might want to dictate to your ipods or IPhones. There is now a free app that can go on it so that you might dictate some text to your device. It is made by the same company that makes the dragon naturally speaking software. Just thought people might like to know. Keep in mind that because the app mite take up space on the device your voice will be sent to a server to be analyzed. This means that you will have to be connected to the INTERNET in anyway possible.
Not so sure of this but, from what I have herd your contact list will be analyzed. So, if you are concerned about this don't take the app!
iPod touch and iPod nano got my attention. very attractive.
I think we should do a conference about the iPod Touch. For those of us who are more experienced at using the device, we could answer your questions and walk you all through the basics. And we can talk about advanced features, how to download apps, navigating pages with Safaari, etc etc.
I hope we can do it sometime soon!

I'm really on the fense about getting a touch.
Sure, its cool. I'll give it that but, I'm not sure its truely worth my money. moste things I would doo with it, I could already doo with other devices plus, I'm not a huge fan of the virtual keyboard. I like many of the gestures and its functionality but I'm just not sure if I could truely get full use of the device with out accessive anger on my part. I'm also thinking about a fifth gen ipod nano because What I'd really use the ipod for in the first place is music... I need a new music player not so muchanother all in one device my laptop and phone seem to doo a good job of these things.
So, honestly, the device has major potential but, i'm just not sure if its really something I'd feel I got my monies worth out of.
the good:
voice over support
many interesting apps
games
full set of ipod features
really nice screen for video and other viewing.
the bad:
I'm not too fond with the virtual keyboard.
Not sure I'd really like the device (feel I got my monies worth)
In the end, i'm not sure I really should drop all that cash on another "doo it all device."
your thoughts?
I can understand that. I'd get it for all the memory it has though, but it's just me!
Well, I just got the 5th gen Nano. there are still a few bugs like the fact that it won't speak subfolders. example, you go in to albums, it reads the tracks within the albums, but not the album names. its the same with most of the stuff as far as i can tell. podcasts, using the alarms.... no speech for subfolders. also, i've had trouble with itunes as wel. i'm going to look in to this j tunes later on. any comments on the subfolders thing? and i agree about the touch. i just don't think i would use all the features. anyway, my boyfriend has one i can play with! :)

I have one of the older IPOD shuffles that does not have voiceover on it due to the lack of menus. I'd love one of the sixty-four-gig ones since that would be more than enough space for all of the music I have so far.
Enable voice tagging in iTunes with your Nano.
I just baught an ipod touch and am fairly happy with it so far. It takes some getting used to and does have a higher learning curve then other devices but I think it's worth it. My advice for anyone considering purchasing one is to talk to a manager at the apple store and get the 10% restocking fee waved in case you don't like it. I talked to a manager and explained that being blind determining weather I was capable of using a touch screen device is something that would take me a few days and not something I could do in five minutes at the apple store. At that point she gave me her card with a note saying if I do return the device the 10% restocking fee will be waved in my case. I'm not going to return the device though.
Oh awesome. Thanks for the heads-up!:)
the subfolder thing is a problem despite the voice tagging. if i hadn't enabled that, it wouldn't be reading anything at all. is this not something others are having trouble with? its been mentioned on the apple forums. oh, and about the restocking thing... you're lucky indeed! they run a no refund polacy in the UK! very tricky! if its been opened, you're stuck with it. mind you, we don't have actual apple stores so maybe that's the reason.
I can use itunes just fine and I have jaws 9. the iPod I have is the fourth generation nanno; there's a checkbox in itunes to enable speech output and it works wonderfully.
I thought they did have an apple store or 2 over in the UK now.
